84. Inspiration from the book: The Monk Who Sold His Ferrari by Robin S. Sharma

This Sound Bite is a combination of building on a previous episode which was Ep 83 where we explored intuition by digging into the Trust Your Gut of the book, Trust Yourself, by Melody Wilding, and we are gathering inspiration from Robin S. Sharma’s book The Monk Who Sold His Ferrari.

Sharma’s fiction book is about courage, balance, abundance, and joy through eyes of the character Julian Mantle, a lawyer forced to confront the spiritual crisis of his out-of-balance life when he has a massive heart attack right in the middle of a courtroom.

Here are the Takeaways:

1. Thoughts are vital and most people don’t give any thought to the nature of their thoughts yet the quality of our thinking determines the quality of our life.

2. Stillness if the stepping stone to connecting with the universal source of intelligence.

We hope you’ll enjoy this episode!

00:00:05
Hi there. Welcome to episode 84, which is

00:00:08
a girl Take the lead Sound Bite. And A Sound Bite is a short

00:00:11
episode which may be a bit more about a topic we've covered in

00:00:15
one of our previous episodes or a quick inspiration, and today's

00:00:20
episode is a combination of the two.

00:00:22
In our episode 83, we explored intuition by digging into the

00:00:27
chapter Trust Your Gut from the book, Trust Yourself by Melody

00:00:32
Wilding. Today we'll build on that and

00:00:36
pull some inspirational gems at the same time.

00:00:40
From Robin S Sharma's book, The Monk Who Sold His Ferrari The

00:00:45
Monk Who Sold His Ferrari is a fable and old boy.

00:00:50
When I was reading it, I sure was hoping it was a true story

00:00:54
of living with courage, balance, abundance and joy.

00:00:58
But turns out it's affection piece of courage, balance,

00:01:02
abundance and joy. The book tells the extraordinary

00:01:06
story of Julian Mantle, a lawyer forced to confront the spiritual

00:01:12
crisis of his out of balance life when he has a massive heart

00:01:16
attack Right in the middle of the courtroom.

00:01:18
He sold all his material possessions and headed for India

00:01:23
on a personal odyssey of the South before it was too late.

00:01:27
Throughout the book, the story is told of his transformation

00:01:32
and is revealed to his mentee, another hotshot lawyer, John,

00:01:38
about his search for the timeless virtues of enlightened

00:01:42
living. And I thought you might enjoy

00:01:44
hearing about some of these virtues.

00:01:47
The first one we'll cover is Master Your Mind.

00:01:50
The character Julian in the book says the mind is a wonderful

00:01:55
servant but a terrible master. If you have become a negative

00:02:00
thinker, this is because you have not cared for your mind and

00:02:04
taken the time to train it to focus on the good.

00:02:09
And he quotes Winston Churchill who said quote the price of

00:02:14
greatness is responsivity over each of your thoughts.

00:02:21
Julian explains thoughts as this.

00:02:24
Thoughts are vital living things, little bundles of energy

00:02:28
if you will. Most people don't give any

00:02:32
thought to the nature of their thoughts, and yet the quality of

00:02:37
their thinking determines the quality of your life.

00:02:41
Thoughts are just as much a part of the material world as the

00:02:46
lake you swim in or the street you walk on.

00:02:50
Weak minds leads to weak actions.

00:02:54
A strong, disciplined mind which anyone can cultivate through

00:02:58
daily practice, can achieve miracles.

00:03:02
If you want to live life to the fullest, care for your thoughts

00:03:07
as you would your most prized possessions.

00:03:11
Work hard to remove all inner turbulence.

00:03:15
The rewards will be abundant. He also adds this stillness is

00:03:21
the stepping stone to connecting with the universal source of

00:03:24
intelligence that throbs through every living thing.

00:03:29
You may remember from our episode 83, we talked about the

00:03:35
practice of stillness so that you could hear your intuition

00:03:39
and listen for your purpose. Julian says the secret of

00:03:44
happiness is simple. Find out what you truly love to

00:03:49
do and then direct all your energy towards it.

00:03:54
Once you do, this abundance flows into your life.

00:03:59
All your desires are filled with ease and grace.

00:04:04
The 2nd virtue is follow your purpose.

00:04:09
That part of the story opens with the quote from the author,

00:04:14
Foster C McKellen. It goes like this.

00:04:17
Trust yourself. Create the kind of life you will

00:04:21
be happy to live with all your life.

00:04:25
Make the most of yourself by fanning the tiny inner sparks of

00:04:31
possibility into the flames of achievement.

00:04:34
I really like this part in the story.

00:04:37
When Julian says awaken your mind to the abundance of

00:04:41
possibility around you start to live with more zest.

00:04:47
The human mind is the world's largest filtering device.

00:04:52
When used properly, it filters out what you perceive as

00:04:57
unimportant and gives you only the information you are looking

00:05:02
for at the time. I think I was drawn to this part

00:05:05
of the story because perhaps like many of you, I'm interested

00:05:09
in abundance and what that means.

00:05:13
It used to mean abundance of money to me, and perhaps

00:05:16
abundance of accolades in my career.

00:05:19
But today, where I am in life, I see that there's a cost to be

00:05:23
paid for that, and perhaps I worry too much about having

00:05:27
enough or even being enough. I know in a lot of our episodes

00:05:32
we've talked about finding more in life, so we have a certain

00:05:36
balance, a certain alignment, and perhaps that's what

00:05:41
abundance is about. Julian tells John this.

00:05:44
From tonight onwards, take complete control of your life.

00:05:50
Decide once and for all to be the master of your fate.

00:05:55
Run your own race, discover your calling, and you will start to

00:06:01
experience the ecstasy of an inspired life.

00:06:07
Finally, always remember that will lies behind you and what

00:06:12
lies in front of you is nothing when compared to what lies

00:06:18
within you. Perhaps hearing this brings you

00:06:21
a bit of peace that have brought me, and perhaps this last quote

00:06:26
I gathered from the book centers you as it did me too.

00:06:31
Never forget the importance of living with unbridled

00:06:34
exhilaration. Never neglect to see the

00:06:38
exquisite beauty in all living things today and this very

00:06:45
moment is a gift. Stay focused on your purpose.

00:06:52
The universe will take care of everything else.

00:06:55
So as I reflect on these passages, I think abundance for

00:06:59
me looks like filling my heart with love, kindness and giving

00:07:05
it to others. I know my purpose right now is

00:07:10
to be with you and for us to be on this journey of discovery

00:07:14
together so we can all use our voices to love and inspire

00:07:21
others on their journey. And on that note will end

00:07:27
today's episode. Thank you for being here.
