Today’s Sound Bite show builds on Ep 82 where we discussed the book Trust Yourself by Melody Wilding. There were an additional gem Yo wanted to share with you about the chapter Trust Your Gut.
Takeaways:
1. It’s tricky to differentiate between intuition and fear.
2. Fear can speak loudly and dramatically while intuition is quiet, without drama.

Welcome to episode 83, which the girl take the lead sound Bite.
00:00:11
And a sound bite is a very short episode that builds on a
00:00:15
previous episode, or it's just a moment of inspiration.
00:00:20
And this episode builds on episode 82, which was based on
00:00:25
the book Trust Yourself by Melody Wilding.
00:00:29
She had so many great things to say, and I wanted to share what
00:00:32
she had to say about Trust Your Gut, because I think sometimes
00:00:37
intuition is looked upon as being some kind of woo woo
00:00:42
thing. And she tells us though, that
00:00:45
it's very grounded in science. She begins by saying there's a
00:00:49
deep neurological basis for it, and our gut instincts can offer
00:00:55
tremendous value. The problem is that sensitive
00:00:58
drivers like us, which we discussed in episode 82, if you
00:01:02
missed what that means, have spent years actively thwarting
00:01:06
their intuition, favoring the voices of other people over
00:01:11
their own. She also says that once you
00:01:15
found your center and you peel back the layers of your negative
00:01:19
thoughts, that's when you can hear the intuition that we all
00:01:23
have. She calls intuition the
00:01:26
sensitive strivers 6 cents. This is how she defines
00:01:31
intuition. It's the ability to immediately
00:01:35
understand something without conscious reasoning.
00:01:39
In other words, answers and solutions come to us, but you
00:01:43
may not always be aware why or how.
00:01:47
Because it's abstract. It tends to be nonverbal and
00:01:51
energetic, but here's some things that she says that can
00:01:55
help us understand and give us examples of what intuition is.
00:01:59
A gut feeling. You know, like if you get that
00:02:02
pit in your stomach feeling, especially when you're looking
00:02:06
at decisions, that's your gut talking loud and clear.
00:02:11
And then there's other physical signs, like dreams or even
00:02:15
getting sick. Researchers at Heart Math
00:02:18
Institute refer to it as energetic sensitivity, noting
00:02:23
that when it happens, a person's heart rhythms tend to
00:02:26
synchronize with the rest of the nervous system, leading to
00:02:30
deeper awareness, energy, and composure.
00:02:34
Flashes of insight, like when we feel like something is pretty
00:02:37
accidental. But actually what's happened is
00:02:40
that the brain has had time to work.
00:02:43
The subconscious and those creative ideas just sort of
00:02:47
float up. And then there's
00:02:49
synchronicities. And those are like when things
00:02:53
happen, when we scan our environment and we filter out
00:02:56
the things that don't seem to make any sense, and you can see
00:03:00
things differently because the brain is looking for them.
00:03:05
It's like when you're going to buy a red car and all you see
00:03:07
are red cars on the road, and then there's a sense of
00:03:13
assuredness. And that's like the confidence
00:03:17
that we get when we pair our intuition with analytical
00:03:21
thinking, and that really informs leadership.
00:03:26
So there's a point in the book where she brings up this whole
00:03:29
notion of fear and intuition, and I wanted to understand more
00:03:34
of that because I can often feel fear.
00:03:38
I think when I think it's intuition.
00:03:42
Fear sounds loud and demanding, and intuition, I know has a
00:03:47
softer voice and a more mellow tone.
00:03:52
With fear we can have a feeling of urgency and it can be driven
00:03:56
by insecurity, while intuition is a calm inner knowing and
00:04:03
driven by confidence and selftrust.
00:04:07
Fear may feel tense or constricting in our bodies,
00:04:10
while intuition can feel expanding and relaxing and
00:04:15
thrives in stillness. Intuitive thoughts reflected
00:04:19
deeper wisdom and pursue our needs and preferences.
00:04:24
I would also add that intuitive messages don't have the word
00:04:28
should in the vocabulary. I would say shoulds are about
00:04:34
avoiding some fear that something bad will happen.
00:04:38
Have there been times in your life where you've just felt
00:04:41
guided along? There might have been lots of
00:04:45
chatter in your head about a big decision like there wasn't mine
00:04:48
about getting married. I was about 35, and I have been
00:04:53
manifesting a smart guy on a motorcycle with long hair and
00:04:57
then he showed up. Was he the one?
00:05:01
I don't know. Maybe he wasn't, but everything
00:05:04
in my being said yes. Do it.
00:05:09
Take the risk. It wasn't a loud, desperate
00:05:13
voice, but a soft, gentle 1. Going with our gut can be
00:05:18
courageous. It's trusting ourselves into a
00:05:22
future with that's basically unknown.
00:05:25
I love it in the book when she says learning to make decisions
00:05:29
based on undeniable sense of integrity isn't an overnight
00:05:33
process. But with time, your intuition
00:05:36
will get more accurate. And the more you practice, the
00:05:41
more we'll keep our strive qualities in balance.
00:05:46
And if you need to know more about Strive, check out episode
00:05:49
82. We talked about what that meant.
00:05:52
Here are some thoughts she gives us about getting unstuck when
00:05:56
making decisions. Test Drive your decision like
00:06:00
maybe we'll play it. Cultivate an open mind using the
00:06:05
sensitive striver strength of being observant.
00:06:09
Build in buffer time to decompress and reflect on what's
00:06:12
going on with you. That's my best time to write.
00:06:17
Limit the drain of decision fatigue she mentions during the
00:06:22
day all the decisions we need to make from the minute we get
00:06:26
up-to-the-minute we go to sleep and by letting go of some of
00:06:31
those decisions that we really don't need and are unnecessary.
00:06:36
And lastly, we can recall times when we trusted our gut and it
00:06:40
worked out like deciding to marry Steve.
00:06:44
Canny. While there are so many
00:06:47
incredible chapters in this book, I picked this one in
00:06:51
intuition because I felt it has so much to do with effective
00:06:55
leadership. And here are some points to
00:06:59
connect the dots for you. Effective leaders integrate
00:07:03
intuition and rationality in decision making, problem
00:07:08
solving, to think outside the box and consider unconventional
00:07:12
approaches to challenges. Emotional intelligence, which
00:07:17
we've covered a lot in our episodes, which leads to better
00:07:21
understanding and empathizing with others and their emotions
00:07:25
and needs. When leaders trust their own
00:07:29
intuition and act authentically, members of the group feel
00:07:34
listened to and heard. And on that note will end
00:07:39
today's episode. And may we all be filled with
00:07:43
courage to listen to our intuition and quiet enough to
00:07:47
hear it. Thanks for being here and join
