Welcome to 2023! In this episode we explored the following questions based on Jay Shetty’s book: Think Like a Monk, Train Your Mind for Peace and Purpose Every Day:
What is the definition of intention and resolution?
Why might intentions be a better way to approach 2023?
Why do resolutions mostly fail?
What are the 4 fundamental motivations?
Why is the “Why Ladder” so important?
Why isn’t having an intention enough?
What else is required besides a “To Do List”?
What do “Seeds & Weeds” have to do with intentions?
Here’s a link to Marianne Williamson’s poem recited in the movie Mr. Carter.
Here’s a linkto Ep. 38 where we covered The Work by Byron Katie.

Welcome to episode 51 up. Girl Take the Lead were each
00:00:10
week. We explore Womanhood and
00:00:12
Leadership, woohoo. It's our first episode for 2023.
00:00:22
And we are so excited to have you here.
00:00:26
Every year. We see tons of ads about New
00:00:28
Year's resolutions, and a lot of the times I'm paralyzed, it,
00:00:33
they definitely become a big. Should this year.
00:00:36
I was hearing more and more into more about intentions and how
00:00:42
they were different from resolutions.
00:00:44
And how goals fit in, I was real familiar with goals because
00:00:48
they're always a part of a marketing plan that I've ever
00:00:51
done. So I I thought we dig in and
00:00:54
look together at this, With a Little Help from Jay Shetty and
00:00:58
his book, think, like a monk train.
00:01:02
Your mind for peace and purpose every day.
00:01:05
He has a lot to say about intention so I'll bring that
00:01:09
research to you today. In this episode, you may know
00:01:12
Jay Shetty as a social media Superstar and hosted the podcast
00:01:17
on purpose which takes aspects of having been a monk Two
00:01:22
practical everyday living. He spent four summers in India,
00:01:27
interning at corporations and training.
00:01:30
With the international Society for Krishna Consciousness, and
00:01:35
three years, living a Vedic, monk lifestyle, at an ashram in
00:01:41
Mumbai. India here you go.
00:01:45
Thanks for listening. So let's start by looking at the
00:01:51
definitions of in tension and resolution Diana.
00:01:55
Rob, a psychologist. And author says an intention is
00:02:00
something you want to manifest in your life or some guiding
00:02:04
principle that you want to live. By while resolutions are hard
00:02:09
and fast goals that are either achieved or broken.
00:02:13
Intentions are broader ideas So then I started to wonder what is
00:02:20
the difference between an intention and a goal.
00:02:23
And here's what I found, a goal describes what you want to do in
00:02:27
the future. So then I wondered what's the
00:02:31
difference between an intention and a goal and I found this a
00:02:37
goal describes what you want to do in the future.
00:02:41
It focuses on external accomplishments and is something
00:02:45
you can clearly check off a list like go rock climbing or make a
00:02:51
successful pie crust and intention describes how you want
00:02:56
to feel its focus is internal on your relationship with yourself.
00:03:05
So in my search I found this take interesting, resolution
00:03:13
seem to ask us to be perfect something we can never achieve
00:03:18
resolution seem to focus only on the outcome, not the journey.
00:03:25
So in setting an intention you resolve that you're already
00:03:29
enough. So you move forward without
00:03:33
having an attachment to the outcome.
00:03:36
It's more about the journey so then I wonder like what makes
00:03:41
resolutions fail then. So here's what I found.
00:03:46
Many people blame their failure to fulfill resolutions on a lack
00:03:51
of time, resources or motivation or a loss of passion after
00:03:57
starting. Only about 16 percent of people
00:04:01
are able to follow their resolutions.
00:04:05
The majority give up within 1 to 6 weeks of starting and many of
00:04:10
these resolutions are repeated year after year, some of the
00:04:15
resolutions bail. Because one We've set
00:04:20
unrealistic resolutions to we lack accountability 3, there's
00:04:28
no tracking or review for. There's a lack of planning
00:04:33
five-week have self-doubt. And six the resolution is
00:04:40
unclear. So given these pitfalls after
00:04:44
looking at intentions, which we said our broader in scope.
00:04:51
Could they be more appealing to do for the beginning of the new
00:04:54
year? So, here's what I found in Jay.
00:04:57
Shetty's book in chapter 4 where he begins to talk about
00:05:02
intentions. So, here's a quote from that
00:05:07
book. In our heads, we have an image
00:05:10
of an ideal life, our relationships, how we spend our
00:05:15
time and work, and Leisure, what we want to achieve Even without
00:05:20
the noise of external influences certain goals, Captivate Us.
00:05:24
And we design our lives around, achieving them, because we think
00:05:27
they will make us happy. But now we will figure out what
00:05:32
drives these Ambitions, whether they are likely to make us truly
00:05:37
happy and whether happiness is even the right target.
00:05:40
So it gives us a story about having come out of a class, and
00:05:45
he was strolling in the ashram with the senior Monk and a few
00:05:49
other students. And, as they walked, the senior
00:05:53
monk mentions, the achievements of some of the other monks, they
00:05:56
pass. And he points out that This one
00:06:00
can meditate for eight hours. Straight a few minutes later.
00:06:03
He gestures to another and he says, this one fast for seven
00:06:06
days in a row further along he points.
00:06:10
Do you see the man sitting under the tree?
00:06:12
He can recite every verse from the scripture impressed.
00:06:18
Jay says, I wish I could do that, the monk pauses and turns
00:06:23
to him, he says, do you wish you could do that or do you wish you
00:06:28
could learn? Learn to do that.
00:06:31
What do you mean he asks and he says think about your
00:06:37
motivations. Do you want to memorize all the
00:06:41
scripture? Because it's an impressive
00:06:43
achievement or do you want the experience of having studied it?
00:06:49
In the first, all you want, is the outcome in the second.
00:06:53
You are curious about what you might learn from the process.
00:06:59
And Jay said, he says this New Concept for me was A New Concept
00:07:03
for me and it blew my mind and reading this, I got to tell you,
00:07:06
it blew my mind to he goes on to talk about for motivations from
00:07:10
a hindoo philosopher and the first one is fear.
00:07:15
Which is being driven by sickness poverty, fear of Hell,
00:07:19
or fear of death. The second one is desire seeking
00:07:22
personal gratification through success wealth and pleasure.
00:07:27
The third one is Duty motivated by gratitude responsibility and
00:07:32
the desire to do the right thing.
00:07:34
And the last one is love compelled for care for others
00:07:39
and the urge to help them. so, if we take these motivations and
00:07:46
we look at them, And are honest to our with ourselves about what
00:07:52
our motivations actually are. We can then look at and begin to
00:07:58
question our intentions and see them a bit more deeply and the
00:08:05
way he suggest we do that is the why ladder wh-why?
00:08:12
And it takes these for motivations, these states are
00:08:16
the roots of all intentions. You develop your intentions to
00:08:20
drive forward. So your intention is who you
00:08:24
plan to be in order to act with purpose and feel that what you
00:08:30
are doing is Meaningful. So what I did was I took this as
00:08:37
an exercise for myself so and you can be involved in this
00:08:42
because it has to do with the podcast.
00:08:44
I thought we would use that as an example.
00:08:47
You know, because he says that having an intention alone isn't
00:08:51
enough, we have to live our intentions, it needs to permeate
00:08:55
our behavior and we need to consider the work.
00:08:59
We need to do behind what we want to achieve.
00:09:03
So the why ladder you probably might be familiar with this.
00:09:07
It's asking the question. Why fiber six times, let's start
00:09:13
with this example. My intention is to provide you
00:09:17
our listener, a unique podcast experience, where you feel
00:09:21
inspired motivated and learn something new about leadership
00:09:26
from different generational perspectives.
00:09:30
So the first why, why is that important?
00:09:33
And I could say well the girl Take the Lead podcast can grow
00:09:38
because of this unique format. And why is that important?
00:09:42
Then I said, well, reaching more people equals more potential,
00:09:47
diverse effective leaders, especially women of younger
00:09:51
Generations. Will why is that important?
00:09:56
More effective leaders can help others belong.
00:10:00
Learn to enhance their own performance and Foster their
00:10:03
own, creativity and teamwork. Well, why is that important?
00:10:09
And I thought well maybe by understanding and observing the
00:10:12
dimensions of leadership, we can suffer less and Lead others with
00:10:17
empathy and compassion. Well, why is that important?
00:10:22
Then it was, I'd like to help other women from feeling less
00:10:26
than like I did in my career. And why is that important?
00:10:33
Because that is about me being helpful.
00:10:40
And feeling useful. So, if we look at those, you can
00:10:47
see that. I'm I went back and looked at
00:10:49
the four motivations and I thought, okay, it's Duty and
00:10:53
love perhaps that's really guiding me.
00:10:58
And one thing he talks about is that there's no pure intention.
00:11:02
There's no like 100% good service, you know, our ego
00:11:06
always kind of gets involved in that and there's different
00:11:10
percentages. So like for Duty.
00:11:12
When you look at my intention that we just talked About.
00:11:16
Perhaps it's you know 30% and love would be 70%, you know and
00:11:24
depending how we look at them, perhaps that percentage changes.
00:11:27
So that's one way to look at it. And because intentions, permeate
00:11:33
our Behavior, we have to live, Our intention and avoid those
00:11:39
Wishful, manifestations. Like I wish I could do this, or
00:11:44
I wish I were a better podcaster, or I wish.
00:11:48
I were in the top 1% of podcasters, all of that stuff
00:11:54
because you have to really be willing to do the work.
00:11:59
And we've brought that up. Before in our podcast,
00:12:01
especially about doing Byron, Katie's work, he has a nice way
00:12:07
of looking at this. So if you take your to-do list
00:12:12
to include also, who you need to be to achieve that.
00:12:18
So here's my example, let's say on my to-do list which is there
00:12:21
keep researching leadership topics about using our five
00:12:26
themes that we pointed out in the last episode, our voice
00:12:30
Observing our emotions learning from others developing
00:12:34
strategies to listen to ourselves and have fun.
00:12:39
And so then the question is, who do I need to be to to that?
00:12:44
And what came up was, I need to be organized in order to
00:12:48
research and I need to execute plans so that requires
00:12:54
organization and also involves curiosity and passion.
00:13:00
So that's who I need to be to achieve that.
00:13:03
Let's say, I also have on my to-do list, which I do is to
00:13:08
invite gas that challenge the status quo and support women as
00:13:12
Leaders. So then who do I need to be to
00:13:15
do that? I need to be able to seek and
00:13:19
accept help from others, including men who championed the
00:13:24
efforts of women. So, that was cool to see.
00:13:29
And then also on my to-do list, I have develop and execute a
00:13:33
Content marketing plan, So who do I need to be to do that?
00:13:39
I need to suspend whatever I think I know and continue to be
00:13:44
a beginner in personal branding. So maybe that's helpful to you.
00:13:52
I know you probably thought resolutions might be looking a
00:13:55
lot easier than doing intentions, but in order to
00:14:00
achieve those things we want to do, I agree that we have to do
00:14:04
work around that. There's another section.
00:14:08
I thought in the chapter chapter 4 again of this book that I
00:14:13
thought was really helpful and it's called seeds and weeds and
00:14:18
they can be summarized in this Tick-Tock he did one of my
00:14:21
favorite meditation practices that I do, which is the smallest
00:14:24
and shortest part of my meditation is that I've refined
00:14:27
my intention, what I mean by that is every day I write down
00:14:31
thoughts in my mind that are either weeds or seeds.
00:14:36
Seeds are ones that I want to grow seeds of things that I want
00:14:39
to plant, because they're full of love compassion, empathy.
00:14:42
Kindness, And the weeds agreed negativity manipulation power
00:14:50
control. So here's the takeaway about
00:14:54
intentions. Perhaps resolutions.
00:14:57
Haven't worked because they haven't been realistic or they
00:15:01
weren't internally motivated. Perhaps they were shoulds
00:15:06
instead of wants And because intentions are broader in scope,
00:15:11
we can do some work around them and use the why ladder.
00:15:15
So we better understand our motivations about who we need to
00:15:20
be in order to reach our goals associated with them.
00:15:25
And that's where the real work happens.
00:15:27
Shifting ourselves to be someone.
00:15:29
We need to be So to help you along and to enter episode
00:15:34
today, I thought it would be great to have a little
00:15:37
motivation from the movie mr. Carter, we're Team accrues
00:15:42
recites the poem by Marianne Williamson.
00:15:46
Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate.
00:15:49
Our deepest fear is that, we are powerful beyond measure.
00:15:52
It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens
00:15:55
us. Your playing small does not
00:15:57
serve the world. There is nothing enlightened
00:15:59
about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure
00:16:02
around you. We were all meant to shine as
00:16:05
children, do it's not just in some of us, it's in everyone.
00:16:10
And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give
00:16:14
other people permission to do the same as we are liberated
00:16:17
from our own fear. Our presence automatically
00:16:21
liberates others. Thank you for joining us for
00:16:25
this episode. We hope this kicks off your new
00:16:27
year with an approach to intentions that might be helpful
00:16:31
throughout the year. So in keeping with our intention
