26. What do emotions (reference: Atlas of the Heart by Brené Brown, Bittersweet by Susan Cain) have to do with patriotism?

Beliefs about “what is it to be an American” can inform how we lead. Yo was intrigued this July 4th about patriotism, the emotions surrounding it, and how they inform how we lead. This episode discusses recent Gallup poll research, presents key articles and blog about the topic, plus includes some input from friends on the subject. Also included are passages from the books Atlas of the Heart and Bittersweet.

Shout out to special input from Melissa Brunetti, Christina Vine, and Linda Gardner Crandall!! Thank you.

Here are some of the questions covered:

· What is patriotism and nationalism? How are they different?

· What are recent Gallup Poll results about American’s pride?

· What emotions could be at play given the Gallup Poll trend?

· What insights could at work within the U.S.?

About Yo:

Yo, our podcast Boomer, has been in marketing leadership positions for over 42 years and managed teams of 1 to 14. This Fall she will begin a new phase in her career and begin teaching Consumer Behavior at San José State University in the Marketing and Analytics department within the Lucas School of Business. Her drive to achieve came from her father’s Mexican American roots and growing up in a bi-ethnic family where acceptance was a struggle. She got her MBA in 1978 when few women were in Business Schools and benefited from scholarship and affirmative action programs. She’s led marketing efforts for large companies and start-ups, nonprofits and for-profit, and domestic and global organizations. She has been in a 12 step recovery program over 21 years for eating addiction. Her two daughters are involved in this podcast because she thinks they’re so interesting, intelligent and totally respects their point of view on things. She was been given many opportunities to lead by women who have gone before her and she now wishes to repay that forward by helping all women lead!
