When I asked my daughters, Emma and Kiki, if they’d come back to Girl, Take the Lead!, they had one request:
It had to be FUN.
Challenge accepted.
Back in 2022, Emma, our Millennial, and Kiki, our Gen Zer, joined me for Episode 22, “The Slang Challenge: How Many Do You Know?” They tested their Boomer mom on Millennial and Gen Z slang, I tested them on Boomer slang - and let’s just say Mom had some catching up to do.
More than 300 episodes later, we decided it was time for a rematch.
This time there’s aura farming, canon events, rizz, crashing out - and a few Boomer terms thrown in for good measure.
And I have to say... Mom does a little better this time.
But somewhere between the guessing, teasing and laughing, we discover something none of us really expected: some of the slang Emma and Kiki are teaching me doesn’t even belong to their generations anymore.
Gen Alpha has entered the chat.
Suddenly, my daughters are beginning to experience what it feels like to hear a younger generation use words they don’t completely understand.
Funny how that happens.
Maybe that’s part of what makes conversations like this so much fun. Language changes. Generations change. We change. And staying curious about one another gives us another way to stay connected.
We also continue one of my favorite Girl, Take the Lead! traditions and ask Emma and Kiki what they would tell their younger 20-something selves today. Their answers take our very silly conversation somewhere more meaningful - into relaxing, trusting ourselves, expressing what we really feel, and realizing we don’t have to make everyone happy.
In This Episode, We Talk About:
How slang travels across Millennial, Gen Z, Gen Alpha and Boomer generations
Whether Mom has gotten any better since our first challenge
The difference between something that slaps and food that’s smackin’
What happens when Millennials and Gen Z start hearing slang from a generation younger than they are
What Emma and Kiki would tell their younger 20-something selves
The Slang Challenge
How many of these do you know?
The younger-generation challenge for Mom:
Aura Farming • Looks Maxing • Being Cooked • Cheugy • Canon Event • Rizz • Crash Out • Cap • Bet • Slap • Smackin’
Mom’s challenge for Emma & Kiki:
Moo Juice • Aggro • Fink • Dish It Out • Loaded • Split
More About Emma & Kiki
Emma Canny - our Millennial
Her career has taken her from paralegal work into contract and strategic sourcing roles in the tech world.
Emma is also co-host of Booking Wild with Emma and Fran, where two book-loving friends talk about - you guessed it - books! She also shares her love of reading as @leatherboundgremlin on IG.
And since our original Slang Challenge, Emma has gotten married - giving us a few new “canon events” to talk about!
Kiki Canny - our Gen Zer
After working in development and marketing for a nonprofit serving young people, Kiki moved into the tech world and landed what she calls her dream job. Her love of gaming, internet culture, creativity and all things a little spooky gives her a definite advantage in this Slang Challenge.
And yes, she now has another very important member of the family: her dog, Chubbs.

Coming Next
Our next Sound Bite, I want to explore a different question:
What if fun is the point?
[00:00:06] [SPEAKER_00] Welcome back to Girl, Take the Lead. I'm your host, Yolanda Canny. Today we're doing something a little different and definitely having fun. My daughters, Emma and Kiki are back. Way back in 2022, they joined me for episode 22, the Slang Challenge. How many do you know? They tested their boomer mom here on millennial and Gen Z Slang. I tested them on some boomer slang.
[00:00:36] [SPEAKER_00] And well, I didn't do exactly very well. More than 300 episodes later, I thought it was time for a rematch. When I asked the girls if they'd come back though, they had one condition. It had to be fun. So here we go. There are new words, some old words, lots of guessing, and apparently Gen Alpha has entered the chat. Let's see if mom can keep up with them this time.
[00:01:05] [SPEAKER_00] Here you go. It's so good to have you back. To Girl, Take the Lead, girl. Why are you laughing? Because it just makes me so happy to see your faces. Welcome back to Girl, Take the Lead. To the girls who got me started on this journey and this path and have come back to visit. So I'm just so excited to have you in the house. Yay!
[00:01:34] [SPEAKER_00] Woohoo! Yay! And girls, we did this kind of episode. It was number 22. And I'm up to 325. Dang! Oh my God! So been busy. Been busy. Lots of guests, lots of recordings, but none of them are as special as having them with you.
[00:02:03] [SPEAKER_00] Wow! Oh man! So we did that episode 22. It was only audio. We weren't doing video back in those days. That was like 2022. So that would have been like around March or so that we recorded, but we've come a long way.
[00:02:25] [SPEAKER_00] Okay. Let's start though for those folks who don't know you to kind of check in and let them get to know your voice and your background a little bit. So Emma, you want to go first?
[00:02:37] [SPEAKER_01] Yeah. I'm Emma. I am the eldest daughter of the Canny girls. I'm 32. And yeah, I'm excited to be here.
[00:02:50] [SPEAKER_00] Thank you, Emma. And Emma, you have your own podcast too.
[00:02:53] [SPEAKER_01] I do have my own podcast. It's currently on hiatus, but yeah, it's called Booking Wild. If you are interested in reading or anything like that, it's a great podcast to listen to. And mom's been a guest on our podcast, so it works out. That was fun. Okay, Keeks, your turn.
[00:03:13] [SPEAKER_02] Okay. Hey guys, my name is Keeky. I also go by Keeks sometimes. She, her pronouns, and I am the youngest in the Canny fam. I'm 29, I think. Yes. And yeah. What else can I say about myself?
[00:03:36] [SPEAKER_02] My hobbies are, I love video games. I love anything like creative, anything a little spooky and weird. And an honorable mention is I have my son, my dog, Chebs, who loves grandma and is a great member of the family. So that has actually changed since last time that the listeners heard from me. So I have a dog now.
[00:04:04] [SPEAKER_02] So I have a dog nephew.
[00:04:08] [SPEAKER_00] You had a big change too, since the last time we recorded.
[00:04:11] [SPEAKER_01] Oh yeah. Which is ironic because I'm not wearing my ring. Um, I went to yoga and I don't wear my rings when I go to yoga. Cause there's, um, my one, my too much information, but my wedding band has emeralds in it. And if you are a fan of gems and geminology, um, emeralds are actually incredibly soft compared to diamonds that are like super hard.
[00:04:35] [SPEAKER_01] So, and we've, we've already had a scare with me losing an emerald from my band. So I'm not trying to, to tempt fate there. Um, yeah, I got married in April. Congratulations, honey. Thank you. It feels like it's been so long and you had no time at all.
[00:04:57] [SPEAKER_00] Wait till it gets to be about 36 years. It will seem like just yesterday.
[00:05:05] [SPEAKER_01] We'll be both surviving the zombie apocalypse by then, most likely. Right.
[00:05:09] [SPEAKER_00] So, so the origin of this episode is to foster communication among generations. And when we did episode 22, you had served up to me, I think about 10 different slang words from Gen Z and millennials. And I didn't do very well.
[00:05:40] [SPEAKER_00] I think I knew like three of the 10 and I served up boomer slang to you guys. And you knew all of it, except maybe one or two. So that's true. I'm thinking, I'm hoping to do better with this go around.
[00:06:01] [SPEAKER_00] And I'm going to serve up some words to you too, just to see if you are still knowledgeable about the generation ahead of you. So Kiki, why don't you go first? I think you wanted to trip me up with something.
[00:06:22] [SPEAKER_02] Sorry, my hesitation was because Trebs is notifying me of a sound. Okay. So I hope we didn't go over this last time. I should have maybe refreshed.
[00:06:39] [SPEAKER_01] But I know I feel like there's it's like, okay, there's been enough time that if we do repeat, it's probably fine.
[00:06:44] [SPEAKER_02] Right, right. That's what I'm thinking too. Okay, mom. Yes. Do you know what aura farming means? Oh, could I have it in a sentence? Yes, you can. Yes, you can. This guy was walking on the beach looking super cool. He was aura farming.
[00:07:11] [SPEAKER_00] I think that's going to be like energy, like looking at your energies, like the different color energies that you have. Okay. Okay. That's not bad.
[00:07:25] [SPEAKER_02] That's pretty cool. That's not bad. So that's kind of close. Aura farming is doing something to like boost your cool factor or your cool energy or your vibe. So doing anything to boost your aura. Okay. And kind of comes from video games almost how, you know, you're in farming is the aspect of it as well. Maybe separate from video games. But farming is like you're trying to collect more aura.
[00:07:53] [SPEAKER_02] So you're trying to expand your aura strength.
[00:08:00] [SPEAKER_00] So I got a half a point?
[00:08:02] Yeah. Yeah.
[00:08:03] [SPEAKER_02] I think you're pretty close. The other thing about it is aura farming usually has to happen with a public setting. So it could be on social media. It could be like IRL. It takes, you know, some type of like interaction for you to get aura farming.
[00:08:25] [SPEAKER_00] Yeah. Okay.
[00:08:27] [SPEAKER_02] Okay. That's what I got to start. Good job, mom.
[00:08:31] [SPEAKER_00] Okay. So for you guys, what do you think moo juice is?
[00:08:38] [SPEAKER_02] Moo juice?
[00:08:39] [SPEAKER_01] Is that milk? Moo juice. Is it mooed like with a D at the end or moo as in cow? Moo as in cow. Oh, that's got to be milk.
[00:08:51] [SPEAKER_02] You don't have to be so cavalier about it. That's cute though. I think I'll have to call milk moo juice now.
[00:09:00] [SPEAKER_01] Hey, you want some moo juice in your cereal? Okay. When Kiki runs into me at work this week, because we now work for the same entity, I feel like we're going to be like, are you getting moo juice in your coffee?
[00:09:16] [SPEAKER_00] Definitely. All right, Kiki. Or Emma, who's ever going to serve up the next one?
[00:09:22] [SPEAKER_01] I will go next. Okay. Okay. You might have heard it in passing. I think it's a, me and Kiki make a lot of jokes off the term with each other. Um, but so it's kind of like both a term there. It's like the original term. And then it's also like a, a kind of like conjugation of a word that we then use. I know I'm using big SAT words here.
[00:09:49] [SPEAKER_01] Um, the word is looks maxing.
[00:09:55] [SPEAKER_00] Looks like the word L O O K. Yes. Maxing.
[00:10:01] [SPEAKER_01] Yes.
[00:10:03] [SPEAKER_00] So I'm going to guess that that's about like glamorizing, like how to glam it up or. Very close.
[00:10:11] [SPEAKER_01] Can you, can you give me like more context as to like glamming yourself up?
[00:10:17] [SPEAKER_00] Right. I would think that it's somebody that kind of goes to the extreme.
[00:10:24] [SPEAKER_01] That's, I will give you full marks for that because that is, that is very true. So looks maxing is basically doing insane, like a better term shit. Cause that's the only way we can describe it. Um, to make yourself look beautiful. And it came from this guy named clavicular and he's, he wouldn't be a guy that we would want to like have in our orbit. He's not a really good guy.
[00:10:51] [SPEAKER_01] Um, in my opinion, uh, he very much is like, you know, I looked ugly. And then I like, he, he's, he's done this. He's one of those male, um, influencers who like. Can be kind of toxic. And he's known for the looks maxing trends that he does, including like, including, but not limited to like actually hammering your jawbone. So that way it heals back a little bit more masculine and like wider.
[00:11:22] [SPEAKER_01] It's very insane. So if you want to go down a, the youth are not all right rabbit hole, that's what I'd recommend. But looks maxing is like the conjugation of it is like, so we'd like, I would say to Kiki, like, Hey, I had my protein shake this morning. Like I'm protein maxing today. And I was like, I was, I've had a lot of life events this year, like starting a new job, getting married. And so I, I've been joking with people. I'm like, I'm life's maxing. I'm like living life to the fullest. I'm art maxing at the moment.
[00:11:51] [SPEAKER_01] You know, it's like stuff like that is like, okay. That's the conjugation of it. So you can kind of use it as a meme, but also there's like the original term.
[00:12:00] [SPEAKER_00] Okay. All right. Let's see if I can, how about aggro? Do you know what that means?
[00:12:10] [SPEAKER_01] I do. I called my husband that this weekend. So Kiki, do you know?
[00:12:15] [SPEAKER_02] This means you're like being aggressive, like kind of doing things extra, like kind of hand,
[00:12:20] [SPEAKER_00] like, yeah. Aggressive.
[00:12:23] [SPEAKER_02] Yeah. We would also, uh, meant we would say aggro in a legal legends. When you're fighting a monster in the jungle and you want to take the jungle monster's aggression on you because you can take the damage.
[00:12:42] [SPEAKER_00] Ah, cool. Shout out. I see how it's being used. Nice. Well, so far you guys have gotten all the points. Okay. Go on. Okay. My turn.
[00:12:54] [SPEAKER_02] Um, okay. Did we talk about last time about, um, I'm cooked being, being cooked.
[00:13:05] [SPEAKER_00] You would use it in a sentence of I'm cooked fam. Yeah. Like I would think that would be burned out. Like I'm tired or I'm cooked. I'm done.
[00:13:18] [SPEAKER_02] Close, but, but not quite, not quite close. Yeah.
[00:13:24] [SPEAKER_00] All right. Go ahead. Tell me what it means.
[00:13:26] [SPEAKER_02] It's, it me, it could mean that you're exhausted, but usually people will say like, you're, you're like in major trouble or you're like, you're doomed. You're cooked. You're caught. You're cooked. Yeah. You're caught. You are totally cooked. You're SOL. Yeah. Yeah. Like, yeah. That's what that means. I'm cooked chat. I like saying that. I'm cooked chat.
[00:13:50] [SPEAKER_00] Okay.
[00:13:51] [SPEAKER_02] Chat kind of means like, you're taking, this is another slang term as well. Well, that's kind of become more popular because streaming like video games or lifestyles become pretty popular. And when you stream, you have a chat. It's full of people that you can like interact with on. You will see their like text messages like pop up and you can read them in the stream and talk to them. So it's like a fun way of, of talking to like an audience that isn't really there.
[00:14:21] [SPEAKER_02] So you can just be like, oh, I'm, I'm cooked chat. Like I'm, I'm totally screwed on this. And it's kind of funny to say.
[00:14:28] [SPEAKER_00] Okay. Yes. How about, uh, do you know what Fink means?
[00:14:37] [SPEAKER_01] Is that fake Mink? Oh, that's a good guess. How do you spell it?
[00:14:42] [SPEAKER_02] F-I-N-K?
[00:14:44] [SPEAKER_00] Fink. Mm-hmm.
[00:14:46] [SPEAKER_02] I don't know. This actually might be the first one that I'm stumped on. Yay.
[00:14:53] [SPEAKER_01] Can you use it in a sentence, please?
[00:14:55] [SPEAKER_00] Yes. He was a Fink.
[00:15:01] [SPEAKER_01] Oh, was he a playboy? Was he a, was he a bad guy? Was he on Dateline?
[00:15:10] [SPEAKER_00] It's somebody that, um.
[00:15:13] [SPEAKER_02] Wait, can, can I have a guess? Yes. Go ahead. Can I ask? Can I ask? Someone who's like really smooth. Like someone that like has charisma. No. Okay.
[00:15:22] [SPEAKER_00] Well, the opposite actually. Shit. They were, um, somebody who was a tattletale or. A snitch. A snitch. Yeah.
[00:15:35] [SPEAKER_01] Snitches get stitches as they say. I think.
[00:15:39] [SPEAKER_02] I've encountered many in my life.
[00:15:41] [SPEAKER_01] You didn't know that one. Okay. Good one, mom. Good. Good one.
[00:15:46] Good.
[00:15:46] [SPEAKER_01] All right. My turn. Yes. Um, I'm going to go with Chugi, which is slightly older, AKA like five years ago, but still pretty slangy.
[00:15:59] [SPEAKER_00] Okay. I, I think I know, but tell me a sentence.
[00:16:07] [SPEAKER_01] It was like, how, how, how relatable to my main life do I want to be? Um, I will say that outfit I wore to my reunion tip, like could be Chugi. I don't want to be Chugi at my, at my reunion.
[00:16:26] [SPEAKER_00] Right. So it's sort of like, um, like not fashionable. It's good job, mama. Yes. Yeah. Yes.
[00:16:38] [SPEAKER_01] Out of style.
[00:16:39] [SPEAKER_00] Out of style. Yeah.
[00:16:41] [SPEAKER_01] Yeah. Yeah. So like if the context that I was thinking of was there's wedding trends that are considered very Chugi and it's like wedding trends that like, I would have had like on my Pinterest before I like perched it. Um, when I got engaged that I had like when I was in college and it was like, you know, big chunky, like French manicures that are square.
[00:17:06] [SPEAKER_01] Like, like those, like, you know, big chunky rings, like all my bridesmaids wearing Chevron, like stuff like that. That's considered very Chugi. So yeah.
[00:17:19] [SPEAKER_00] Oh boy. Oh boy. Okay. So I got that one. That's good. Um, see, you probably know this one, but dish it out.
[00:17:36] [SPEAKER_01] Like spill the tea. Give me, give me the deets.
[00:17:39] [SPEAKER_00] It's like the advice. Give me advice. Okay. Yeah.
[00:17:42] [SPEAKER_01] Yeah. Okay.
[00:17:44] [SPEAKER_00] Definitely. Okay. How about you key? Got another one? Yes. Okay.
[00:17:52] [SPEAKER_02] Canon event.
[00:17:55] [SPEAKER_00] Canon.
[00:17:57] [SPEAKER_02] C A N O N space event.
[00:18:03] [SPEAKER_00] So I was thinking my first instinct was that it's an extraordinary thing, like a cannon, like a blast, like super fun and out there, but not always fun. Okay.
[00:18:28] [SPEAKER_02] But you're, you're close. Again, we should have a counter of how many times we say you're close this time though.
[00:18:36] [SPEAKER_00] I've been closer than the last time.
[00:18:38] [SPEAKER_02] Yes. You're doing really well. Yeah. I was killing it. Mom is killing it. Slaying it. I'm slaying it. She's slaying chat. There we go. Okay. You're, you're super close. You want me to give you the definition? Okay. Okay. It's a defining, often difficult life experience that shapes who you are.
[00:19:01] [SPEAKER_00] Oh.
[00:19:02] [SPEAKER_02] So it's kind of like, it's kind of like the hero's journey. That's going to be like the Canon event, like where something like really shapes you. People will use it kind of like in a funny way, almost where they're like, like, what would be something like? I have one.
[00:19:21] [SPEAKER_01] I have one. Okay. Um, do you remember that time I went on a date before I met my, my husband and, uh, the guy ran away from me after that was a Canon event. I was literally, I think he got, I was literally texting him. I'm like, I think this guy literally ran away from me on my date. LOL. That's a can't remember that.
[00:19:41] [SPEAKER_02] I do.
[00:19:42] Yeah.
[00:19:42] [SPEAKER_02] Um, you know, I could also say a Canon event, me, uh, failing. I was learning algebra eighth grade. That was a Canon event, you know, where I'm like, whoa, I suck. But then with the hero's journey, I was able to, to learn. And in college, I got honors. I am smart. I just had to work hard. So that's another fun Canon event.
[00:20:10] [SPEAKER_02] But some people will be like, oh, when I discovered, uh, matcha for the first time, that was a Canon event. Like in a joking way, be like, well, that changed my life. You know? So you could, you could use it in a humorous way. You could use it in a serious way too. Cause it is valid. There are important events that really shape us. So.
[00:20:29] [SPEAKER_01] So like when I discovered vitamin C serum, that was a Canon event.
[00:20:33] [SPEAKER_00] Right. Right. What about you, mom? But it wouldn't, it wouldn't be like getting married or.
[00:20:37] [SPEAKER_02] Yeah. Yeah. It could be. Okay. But especially, especially though, if it was like traumatic, like there's gotta be like, it needs to like be in a movie, you know, kind of, kind of vibe. Your wedding could certainly fit mom. There was a lot of drama.
[00:20:54] [SPEAKER_00] Yes. I would definitely say that was a Canon event.
[00:20:59] [SPEAKER_02] Yeah. Or me smushing the birthday cake you worked so hard on. Can I give you a timeout after? And you had a timeout too.
[00:21:08] [SPEAKER_00] Two or three at the time. Yeah. I smushed it. Canon event. I think it was Emma's birthday cake that.
[00:21:16] [SPEAKER_01] I don't even remember.
[00:21:17] [SPEAKER_00] Yeah.
[00:21:18] [SPEAKER_02] I sure remember. Cause mom was really upset.
[00:21:21] [SPEAKER_01] I made it. Like decorated for me would have been a Canon event.
[00:21:26] [SPEAKER_00] All right. Let's see if I got any more for you. How about loaded?
[00:21:32] [SPEAKER_01] Like zooted. Like a lot of money.
[00:21:36] [SPEAKER_00] Like you're drunk. Oh, what did you say?
[00:21:40] [SPEAKER_01] Like you're drunk.
[00:21:42] [SPEAKER_00] Yeah. Drunk. Loaded. Hi.
[00:21:48] [SPEAKER_01] Oh, not that mom would know. You can cut that out.
[00:21:54] [SPEAKER_00] It's true. Um, but yeah. Loaded is typically somebody that's either drunk or high. Okay. Oh, that's surprising. Yeah. So I only have one more for you, but. I have one more. Okay. Let's do. Let's go.
[00:22:13] [SPEAKER_01] I forget if we did this last time. Um, but riz.
[00:22:20] [SPEAKER_00] Oh, um, uh, give me a sentence. Cause I think I know.
[00:22:26] [SPEAKER_01] Uh, Kiki has mad riz. Guys have told me I have riz. Yeah.
[00:22:32] [SPEAKER_00] It's like charisma.
[00:22:33] [SPEAKER_01] In a very good. Can you give me the specific context for the charisma? Cause it's not general. It's very specific.
[00:22:40] [SPEAKER_00] Um, I don't know then. I guess I thought it was like, uh, somebody that was popular or had a certain kind of attractiveness, but maybe it's, it's not as general as that. What, what am I missing there?
[00:23:01] [SPEAKER_01] It's very specific to dating. So it's like. Flirting. Yeah. If you've got game is kind of a synonym. Yeah.
[00:23:11] [SPEAKER_00] Oh.
[00:23:12] [SPEAKER_01] Like, oh, he's got hella riz. Riz. Kiki's got riz.
[00:23:17] [SPEAKER_00] That means that you're attractive in dating.
[00:23:20] [SPEAKER_01] Or she's like good at dating.
[00:23:22] [SPEAKER_02] You specifically. Like you've got game. You've got game. You know, you know how to talk, you know, how to flirt verbally, maybe even with a, you know, eye contact or something, but you know, maybe someone could be attractive physically, but they have no riz, you know, they, they don't know how to talk and flirt and have game.
[00:23:42] [SPEAKER_00] Huh? Okay. Got it. Yeah. It's a good one. How about split?
[00:23:54] [SPEAKER_01] Split.
[00:23:55] [SPEAKER_00] Let's boogie. It's kind of like that. It's like you leave the scene, you know, they split. Oh. Oh. That's kind of what they split. They said it was probably an earlier term to ghosting. Oh.
[00:24:12] [SPEAKER_01] Oh. Oh, in that context.
[00:24:15] [SPEAKER_00] Yeah. They split.
[00:24:16] [SPEAKER_01] Oh. Oh.
[00:24:17] [SPEAKER_00] Or you split or you took off, you know? Interesting. Yeah.
[00:24:25] [SPEAKER_02] Like they, they go to the like event that they were at.
[00:24:29] [SPEAKER_00] Not just that, but it could be the relationship or, or anything like that. Interesting. Yeah. Yeah. Typically, I think back in the day, it was related more towards relationships that you might have had. Interesting. Yeah. Yeah. They split. Damn. All right. One more. Got one more for me. Crash out.
[00:25:02] [SPEAKER_02] Do you want it in a sentence?
[00:25:03] [SPEAKER_00] Yeah. Cause I think I would have thought that it would be like, like we used to say crash, but it was more like to, you know, like be tired and.
[00:25:15] [SPEAKER_02] Oh, like crash. Yeah. Like, no, it's a little different. So maybe, um, let's see. Okay. I lost in my video game and I wanted to crash out.
[00:25:34] [SPEAKER_00] Would it be just to pull away and leave it or?
[00:25:39] [SPEAKER_02] No, the opposite. You would like freak out. You'd be like crashing out is to lose your temper. Oh. To emotionally lose control. So you're kind of just like crashing out. You're just like going crazy, you know, like let him have it.
[00:25:55] [SPEAKER_00] Wow.
[00:25:56] [SPEAKER_02] Yeah.
[00:25:58] [SPEAKER_00] Crashing. Okay. I have to remember that one. Crashing.
[00:26:05] [SPEAKER_02] We don't really ever crash out, you know, but some people in relationships would be like, yeah, I was fighting with my partner and they like crashed out on me or something like that to say like a pretty intense fight.
[00:26:16] [SPEAKER_00] Hmm. So before we got on, I think key you saw me, I was taking a little survey online to try and prepare for this call. And of course you didn't use any of the words, but the ones I did not get wrong. I did not get right. Rather one was cap. Okay. Cause that means lie.
[00:26:46] [SPEAKER_00] No cap. No cap.
[00:26:48] [SPEAKER_02] No cap. No lie.
[00:26:49] [SPEAKER_00] No lie. And then, um, another one was bet B E T.
[00:26:59] [SPEAKER_01] Right. Okay. Bet. Bet.
[00:27:03] [SPEAKER_00] And that just means. Okay.
[00:27:06] [SPEAKER_02] Kind of a little bit more than, yeah, it kind of means like, you can like, trust my word on that, you know, or like, yeah, got it.
[00:27:17] [SPEAKER_01] You know, or like calling you on the bluff too. Huh? Like, like, yeah, like Fran uses it a lot and she'll, I'll, I'll be like, yeah, you're not going to buy it. Like, I've just read this book, but I know you're on a book by man. I know you're not going to buy it. And she's like, okay, that. Right. Right. Right. That sort of thing. Yeah. Sure. Sure. Fran is the co-host of my podcast booking wild that you should check out on Spotify and Apple music.
[00:27:45] [SPEAKER_00] Thank you very much. That's good. Yeah. Um, any other, anything else on this that you want to share with the audience?
[00:27:53] [SPEAKER_02] Did you get slop right?
[00:27:55] [SPEAKER_00] I did not get it right on the quiz, but I know that it means excellent. Right.
[00:28:03] [SPEAKER_02] Right. There's a difference between smack and slap though. I learned that the hard way. I had public embarrassment. Okay.
[00:28:12] [SPEAKER_00] So teach us.
[00:28:13] [SPEAKER_02] Okay.
[00:28:14] [SPEAKER_01] It was a canon event.
[00:28:15] [SPEAKER_02] There was a canon event. Um, okay. Smack, smack in would be for food, food exclusive. Like you're smacking your lips or like, you know, like, oh, this food was smacking. You would, you would not use slap for that. A, a slap, something slaps. It's like you're slapping your knee. Like, oh, this is good. So maybe I used it for food and I was corrected that you would say smacks for that slap would
[00:28:45] [SPEAKER_02] be like good music, you know, be like, oh, this slaps, you know, like, oh, I want to like slap my knee with this. Boom. With the, like the vibe, with the rhythm.
[00:28:54] [SPEAKER_00] Right. So this is so cool. I'm so glad that we did this. And I think we need to do this every few years just to help our audience stay in tune. You just to stay up to date. And I suspect though, that over time, the words from your generation are going to become more everyday speak.
[00:29:20] [SPEAKER_00] And the younger generations, the alpha gen coming up will have their own language, which you will be. It's already happening. It's already happening. You can feel it already.
[00:29:32] [SPEAKER_01] Yeah.
[00:29:33] Yeah.
[00:29:34] [SPEAKER_01] Like a lot of the slang that we just told you is not millennial or Gen Z slang. A lot of it is gen alpha slang.
[00:29:40] [SPEAKER_00] Really?
[00:29:41] [SPEAKER_01] Yeah. This is true.
[00:29:43] [SPEAKER_00] Younger. Okay. Yeah. I'm in my thirties, mom. I'm old compared to young. I think you're, you're young, but it's just off perspective, but you're seeing it already. This is interesting that you're seeing yourselves with this new, you know, communication coming through. Like, what does that mean? And how is that being used? Um, do you see it in the work for us at all, or just sort of just with friends?
[00:30:12] [SPEAKER_01] I do. I have, there's, um, someone on, um, that on a team that I work with a lot who is gen alpha. And the, I think the general like approach to work is very different in like a very refreshing and positive way. Um, but it's, it's really fun. Like, you know, talking to her and be like, oh yeah, like I'm going to have to be more like, what is it? Uh, brain rotted when it comes to talk about stuff with the, with her.
[00:30:38] [SPEAKER_01] Cause she's like so in tune online and I'm just like, all right, I'm gonna have to pick up all the, use all that language that I wouldn't use with like my boss.
[00:30:51] [SPEAKER_00] Interesting. And key, are you seeing it too?
[00:30:54] [SPEAKER_02] Yeah, I think, uh, my workplace is a little like unique though, because I feel like we do have a big emphasis on video game culture and kind of pop culture. So I feel like we're more, you know, open to using those kinds of slang terms. And I do, a lot of these slang terms kind of originate from like internet culture as well.
[00:31:20] [SPEAKER_02] So I think I'm kind of unique in that way too, because I do spend a lot of time like on the internet and engage in internet culture. So it probably depends. I don't really, you know, it kind of depends on some things, but to relate to my experiences. Yeah. I see that work.
[00:31:37] [SPEAKER_00] But one question I, we didn't, I didn't ask this back when we were in episode 22, but somewhere along, I think episode, I don't know, a hundred something. I started asking guests what they would tell their 20 something self today. Now, Kiki, you're still in your twenties, but it would be your younger twenties. Um, and so Emma, why don't you go first? Like, what would you tell your 20 something self today?
[00:32:06] [SPEAKER_01] I'm going to try and not use expletives in case you want to get ad revenue. Um, just relax. Like there were so like, especially cause like I went to my, a place where I spent a lot of my younger twenties, my college, I went back for a reunion and, you know, I just think like there were so many times where I'm like, damn, like every, like so many things you think everything matters so much, or at least I did.
[00:32:35] [SPEAKER_01] And I'm like, it's really like, it's going to be fine. Like, I think there's so much emphasis, especially when you're younger on like, at least from my experience where it's like, you're, there's so much pressure to like have it all figured out because you have to choose what you want to choose what college you go based on the major you want to do. And based on that, you have to decide what you want to do and like, yada, yada, yada. And like, there are times where it just doesn't work out.
[00:33:03] [SPEAKER_01] And it's like, like for me, like I'm doing a job that technically doesn't use any, like either of my degrees, you know, humble brag. But like, you know, I would have relished being young and youthful and being able to like, I don't know, potentially do hikes and stuff without my body slowly decaying. Had I just relaxed a little bit.
[00:33:26] [SPEAKER_00] Nice. How about you, Ki?
[00:33:31] [SPEAKER_02] Yeah, I think early twenties me, I'd probably just tell her to, you're, you're doing everything fine. Don't change a thing. You know, like I think the times that you weren't too sure about things, you know, it was all okay in the end. So just do your best.
[00:33:55] [SPEAKER_02] And I would probably encourage myself to be, you know, I think I've always, even back then I was in tune with myself, but I wasn't fully honest about what I was feeling with other people. And I think that led me to have to correct that like later on in life to allow myself the permission to disagree with people and say my true opinion about things.
[00:34:22] [SPEAKER_02] So I would say like, it's okay to like be an individual and be okay. And, uh, or it's okay to be a individual, to have your own opinions and it's safe to share them. You're not going to be loved any less because you're not going to be, and you can't. The other thing, maybe I tell myself too, is that you can't make everyone happy. And the only person you have for the rest of your life is you.
[00:34:46] [SPEAKER_02] So be yourself, make yourself happy, you know, but at least take care of the people that you love and are important to you as well. So I would, I would say that. How's that? Oh, mom, no, no tears. It's a good one, dude. The twenties are hard, mom, you know, you know how they are. It's tough.
[00:35:12] [SPEAKER_00] Well, I was there for both of you and to hear you reflect on them with such wisdom is just makes my heart feel full and complete. So thank you. Love you, mom. And the last thing I do is, um, you all know my craft corner of the house. So I take over the whole house.
[00:35:40] [SPEAKER_02] The craft annex. The annex. Studio North.
[00:35:44] [SPEAKER_00] Studio North. Is there anything from there that spoke to you that you would like that I would make for you?
[00:35:53] [SPEAKER_01] I mean, Kiki and I, I think are both on the same wavelength with Halloween coming up. We're huge Halloween folks and we love Halloween. I'm very excited. I moved to a new place. Excited to potentially get some trick or treaters because there's kids in the neighborhood. So I think like, I like all your Halloween carts, but especially the one with like the spooky girl with like, you know, the one that matches with the Frankenstein. I think that one's just very quirky and cute.
[00:36:22] [SPEAKER_01] It gives Tim Burton.
[00:36:25] [SPEAKER_00] Definitely. That's very, very good. How about you, Kiki?
[00:36:27] [SPEAKER_02] Yeah. When she girl, um, is one of my favorites. Okay. Um, Halloween, which is also so fun. I hope that's me when, you know, I'm with like Katie and we're like in our sixties and just having fun. And I also love scared snarky cat. I love all Halloween ones. I'm not going to discriminate. All of them are really, really excellent listeners. You got to check it out.
[00:36:53] [SPEAKER_00] I'm working on one right now that says something like some of us think that Halloween is year round.
[00:37:00] [SPEAKER_02] And it is. It is. Except this is the time. Yeah. Yeah. But this is the time to go to TJ Maxx, home goods. Um, Etsy.
[00:37:12] [SPEAKER_01] Yeah.
[00:37:13] [SPEAKER_02] Cool.
[00:37:14] [SPEAKER_01] Poor local. Yeah. You can, you can cut out target.
[00:37:18] It's okay.
[00:37:19] [SPEAKER_00] Well, girls, thank you so much for coming back and visiting your mom and seeing how far she's come since we first started. Um, you know, I wanted to do this as a legacy for you. And it seems like it's just grown exponentially into my own healing and my own like amazing journey doing it.
[00:37:43] [SPEAKER_00] And you guys kind of got me started and I feel like you always have my back and, um, are my best entrusted advisors on, you know, whenever I have like a question about something and I say, what do you think about this person on the show? And, you know, I'm able, you, you help me listen to myself. You play back that. And that's just so appreciated.
[00:38:12] [SPEAKER_01] And that's the important thing.
[00:38:15] [SPEAKER_02] Yeah. Honestly, I was going to say, mom, that I feel like your dedication and hard work for the podcast is so admirable too. And I'm wondering where in the genetics did it get lost for me? Like I can't focus on something for more than an hour, but you're grinding away for 300 episodes. It's literally amazing. You're the coolest.
[00:38:38] [SPEAKER_01] Don't even get me started key. We're both in that boat.
[00:38:41] [SPEAKER_02] Yeah. Do we get dads? Well, we'll talk about it later. We'll take it offline. That's, that's another, uh, professional slang that I like using. I'm like, I'm going to talk to you about this offline.
[00:38:54] [SPEAKER_00] You all have a lot of tenacity. I think your generation goes very fast about things. And so I can see that, um, I feel sometimes like I'm the tortoise, you know, just going along and there's been lots of hairs, like lots of rabbits run over me and on top of me and faster than me.
[00:39:17] [SPEAKER_00] But, um, it has been such a learning experience for me that I wouldn't trade it for anything. And, you know, again, you guys got me started you and anti Bubba, you know, you kind of held my hand and I kind of got through the vulnerability of being so visible. That was hard, but here we are.
[00:39:43] [SPEAKER_02] Here we are. She's killing it.
[00:39:47] [SPEAKER_00] So thank you. Thank you. Thank you for being here.
[00:39:50] [SPEAKER_02] Absolutely. Love you.
[00:39:54] [SPEAKER_01] Love you, ma.
[00:39:58] [SPEAKER_00] Oh, I loved doing this episode and I have to say, I think mom did a little better this time, but what stayed with me wasn't really how many words I got right or wrong. It was how much fun we had simply being together. Emma and Kiki came into this with one requirement. It had to be fun.
[00:40:24] [SPEAKER_00] And I think it was, and then something else happened though. In between the slang teasing and laughter, we talked about growing up being ourselves, what we would tell your 20 something younger self and how our relationships, even our roles as different generations keep changing. We didn't set out to make any of that happen. It just did. And maybe there's something in that.
[00:40:52] [SPEAKER_00] Maybe everything we do doesn't have to start with a goal, an outcome, or even a lesson. Sometimes we can do something simply because we enjoy it and leave room for whatever else might show up. That's what I'll be thinking about in our next soundbite. When we explore the question, what if fun is the point?
[00:41:20] [SPEAKER_00] Thank you, Emma and Kiki for coming back and for helping start this whole girl take the lead adventure in the first place. And thank you for being here with us. Remember, leadership doesn't require us to have all the answers. Sometimes it starts with staying curious, being willing to learn each other's language, and maybe laughing at ourselves along the way.
[00:41:50] [SPEAKER_00] Until next time, take care of yourself. Stay curious. And remember, you are enough. Bye.
